Sex--Stay With Me--

I work as an on-call freelance educator. Some people, including everybody, better know me as a "substitute" teacher. As an OCFE, I've dealt with many people and students, and have heard many conversations.

I heard a short dialogue between two students, recently, which I had to nip in the bud after only hearing three words, which I won't repeat. I only need to say this: apparently they don't have an adequate amount of respect for human reproduction. I shudder to think what words were spoken amongst their peers while they were out of the direct presence of responsible adults.

I think this attitude comes from ignorance. Specifically, ignorance borne of negligence on the part of people who have the appropriate authority to teach others about the facts of life, but fail to do so for one reason or another. My view on human sexuality is simple, but it's concise, and I'm confident it would help people of all ages come to terms with this unavoidable fact of life. Feel free to converse about the following with the person nearest to you, particularly if you don't know them and don't mind being the focus of lawsuits

  • I believe sex should be celebrated, but not exploited
  • I believe it should be understood, but not overvalued
  • I believe it should be recognized, but not magnified
  • I believe it should be contemplated, but not dwelled on or obsessed over
  • I believe it is dignified, and should be respected and bridled rather than shamed and shunned

And, I believe this attitude makes others more human, rather than occasional objects of desire, impulse, and impropriety. I would implore anyone who has charge over anyone else, young or old, to discuss this topic with reverence and sensitivity as it comes up. Find the right balance. Don't force the topic in a non-sequitor and uncomfortable manner, but don't avoid it and neglect to talk about it if it comes up. Then we can make it so that inappropriate conversations never take root in fertile minds and reap embarrassing fruit.
